Read this first

  • Everyone in the field wears eye and ear protection. No exceptions, including the kid who is only watching.
  • Agree on your safe shooting zone out loud before the first bird — never swing the barrel past the person next to you.
  • Action open and unloaded any time you're walking, sitting down, or picking up birds.
  • Point out every other hunter's position when you sit down, then again if anyone moves.
  • Heat is the real risk in September. Water, shade, a hat, and a hard stop when the kid is done.

Licenses & certification

  • SC and NC both require a hunting license plus a migratory bird permit (HIP certification).
  • Hunter education is required for most new hunters — take the course together, it's free.
  • Know the daily bag limit and shooting hours for your state before you go.

Gear checklist

  • 20-gauge shotgun that actually fits the kid (or leave it home the first time)
  • Eye and ear protection for every person in the field
  • Bucket or low stool to sit on
  • A case of water and a cooler
  • Camo or drab clothing, plus a hat
  • Shell pouch and a bag for birds
  • Sunscreen and bug spray

Tips of the trade

  • Your kid's first dove hunt should be about retrieving, counting, and snacks. Shooting can wait for the second one.
  • Set up on the edge of the field near a dead tree or power line — doves use them as landing markers.
  • Shoot ahead of the bird. Dove fly faster than they look and almost everyone shoots behind.
  • Bring twice the snacks you think you need and leave before anyone gets miserable.
  • Pluck and grill the breasts that evening. The meal is half the memory.

Did it? Mark it complete.

We'll add the patch to your crew, drop it in your logbook, and hand you a Mission Complete postcard to post.
